How to Install Kodi on Windows 7 or Windows 8

Your first step to installing Kodi on your computer running Windows 7 or 8 is to head over to the official Kodi download page:

You’ll see that Kodi doesn’t have you pick between Windows versions. This is because the download file will detect your operating system version and install the proper version for your OS.

Note that you have a choice on this page between version 16.1 “Jarvis”, or the up-and-coming version 17, “Krypton”. You can only download 16.1 for now, as Krypton is still in beta and only available for Windows 10 users. Downloading the beta version of “Krypton” will likely result in a file that does not work or install properly.

After downloading, locate where you saved your fault (defaults to your Downloads folder), and load the kodi-16.1-Jarvis.exe file.

Now, go through the installation process, and then proceed to enjoy your Kodi!

Side Note:

Don’t like the included skin (Confluence)? Want to spice your Kodi up a bit? We have a handful of guides on how to install different Kodi builds, as well as a round-up of some of the 1Best Cody builds out there. Why choose a build over a standard Kodi install? You can save yourself time downloading some of the most popular App, and you can add a bit of unique flavor to your Kodi experience.

A Few Notes on Kodi for Windows 7 or 8

For the time being, using Kodi on Windows 7 or 8 is a perfectly acceptable option. However, do note that future Kodi versions are likely to leave older Windows versions behind. Once version 17 “Krypton” hits a full release, you can expect support for 16.1 Confluence to slowly peter out. At that point, it may be in your best interest to upgrade to Windows 10.

Using older, unsupported Kodi versions presents a bit of a security risk. Currently, Kodi is mostly a secure media player. However, it does have its security flaws, some of which are inherent to how Kodi operates, others which will likely be worked out in later versions of Kodi. Once the final version of Kodi 17 “Krypton” hits, we’ll know of any final security updates. Until then, happy streaming!
